Editorial Guidelines for Stationery
Abbreviate compass directions in all street addresses: 638 N. Rogers Street
Spell out numbered streets from First Street through Twelfth Street; use numerals for streets with higher numbers.
901 E. Tenth Street
815 W. 28th Street
Spell out “Street,” “Avenue,” and similar nouns in addresses.
Room or suite numbers should follow the name of the building without punctuation and without the word “room”: Chemistry Building 120.
Names of states should follow U.S. Postal Service abbreviations in a standard address (following a city or town and preceding the zip code): Bloomington, IN 47405. Otherwise, state names are spelled out: 333 N. Indiana Avenue.
Use “phone” instead of “telephone” or “tel.”
Use parentheses around area codes, including toll-free numbers: 1 (888) 555-0000. The word toll-free is hyphenated: toll-free
Separate multiple phone numbers with “or”: 1 (888) 555-0000 or 1 (888) 556-0000.
If only one phone number is listed on the card, do not identify that number as “phone”:
(812) 855-0000
If multiple phone numbers are listed, identify the main number as “phone” and the others according to type of service:
(812) 855-0000 phone
(812) 855-0001 cell
(812) 855-0002 fax
Identify phone numbers for the deaf and hearing impaired (according to the technology used):
TTY
V/TTY
TDD
Do not include the terms “Web” or “Internet” with the URL listing. List only the actual URL. For example:
creativeservices.iu.edu
www.indiana.edu/~iupd
It is no longer necessary to list “http://” with URLs, but "www" should be listed when applicable.
When a URL won’t fit on a single line, try to break it after a slash, dot, or hyphen, and indent the second line by one space:
www.indiana.edu/~ird/cieda/
lacaixa.htm
Consult the IU Style Guide for further editorial guidelines.
